“Bhikku bhikkawe wiyatto, winitho, wisardo, bahussutho, dammadaro, dammanudhamma patipanno sangan sobathi

(“O bhikkus, intelligent and erudite, disciplined, scholarly moral and virtuous bhikkus or moral excellence and deeply imbibed in the Dhamma epitomizes and exemplifies the Sanga”)


These profound words of the Buddha sets the guide lines for the training of a Buddhist monks and they are the basis of the activities and curriculum of the Vajiraramaya’s Sri Vajirañana Bikku Training Center.

The basic training essential for the Buddhist monks takes precedence and predominance in activities of the Bikku training center. Priority is given to the way of life and the correct lifestyle of the bhikku. Hence a time table is set from 5.00 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. for the monk students to adhered strictly. The daily routine set here for the monks is the same as from earlier days of Buddhist bhikku tradition.

From 5.30a.m. to 6.30a.m., the time is exclusively set aside for the worship of the Buddha and chanting pirith. This is followed by a meditation session. These exact events are also carried out in the evening after the education period, which is allocated from 1 p.m. to 5.30p.m.

The study of the Tripitaka -  Scriptures is an essential component and the students monks are encouraged to develop a research based explorative approach. An interest in other in other religious beliefs and religions also encouraged so such study would assist in surmounting practical problems. This will help the monks to carry out his particular responsibilities in the world with new outlooks and agendas. The main purpose is to facilitate the acquisition of a universal education and a knowledge base which will lead to graduate as well as post graduate studies.

Secondary Education:
  • Piriven Final Examination  
  • Prācheena Preliminary (Prārambha exam)  
  • Prācheena Medium (Maddayama exam)
  • Prācheena Final ( Final Exam - Pandith Degree)


Subjects: Pali, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Buddhism, Buddhist Philosophy, English, Mathamatics, Health Science, History, Abhidhamma.
